Butterfly Garden

By:

After completing a campus evaluation, 1st grade students determined the school grounds were in need of a butterfly habitat. The magnet coordinator put the first grade team in contact with a local Girl Scout troop. Together they came up with a plan and a materials list. The materials were donated by the troop and ground was broken in the late summer. Two, three by six beds were developed and native butterfly plants were installed. Teams of 1st grade students have weekly activities involving the natural habitat and are solely responsible for maintaining it. Students awareness and interested in naturescaping has skyrocketed! And, students soon plan to propagate more milkweed to extend the garden.
