3rd Grade Monrovia Canyon trip

MONROVIA CANYON PARK
Each year, the 3rd grade class at New Horizon School enjoys an outdoor field trip to Monrovia Canyon Park. In the beautiful canyon setting, we are able to incorporate learning from our reading, science, and social studies curriculum. My students are eager to hike to the fall since they have just finished reading The Waterfall by Jonathan London.
On the hike and in the nature center, students are able to observe plant and animal adaptations; learn facts about various plants and animals; identify and learn what to do when faced with a poisonous plant or animal; observe predator and prey; investigate decomposition and decay; observe a spider making its intricate web; and use their senses to experience nature.
Students are further intrigued when the naturalist exposes various Native American artifacts and challenges them to figure out their uses. The wooden drill is always the most difficult to decipher. While there is a great deal of learning taking place, my students are still able to take time to enjoy the great outdoors!
