Earth Day Celebration 2012
By:
Kramer students celebrated Earth Day on Friday, April 20th from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The entire student body gathered around the deck at the front entrance of the school. Our program showcased several culminating activities that supported student awareness of honoring and respecting our environment. The activites were:
*Our students studied about reducing, reusing and recycling. Students and staff made a conscious effort to reuse books with our Leave One! Take One! Read Many! book exchange program. Blue recycling bins have been used all year long throughout our building to collect paper and plastic. Our Green Team collects the recycling every Wednesday morning. First grade presented a full PTA program about the three Rs in March.
* A month before the celebration, Kindergarten through 5th grade teachers were asked to have their students write a poem, letter or essay to the Earth to express their appreciation and love of our planet, its natural resources and nature. Each grade level team shared their writings and selected 1 or 2 writings to be read by the author at the celebration.
* One month before the celebration, the Dallas Water Utilities Department spent 3 days at our school to present their "Cease the Grease: Invasion of the Grease Monster" program to our Kindergarten-5th grades students during their specials period. The program taught the students the most environmentally friendly way to dispose of oils and grease. This helps to keep our water pipes and water free and clear of oils and grease. We then designated April 20th to be our used cooking oil collection day to coincide with our celebration.
*Our Art teacher, Mr. Johnson, shared with the students the many different logos that have been used throughout the past 42 years of Earth Day celebrations. A contest was held to create a new Earth Day logo just for our school. The winning logo would be used on an Earth Day cotton bag that would be sold for $8.00 to support our garden budget.
All of the activities were part of our Earth Day program.
