Kramer Garden Replanted 2012
By:
The front garden area of our school needed a boost, so 2nd grade students helped to clear the area by raking leaves, pulling weeds and making the beds ready for tilling machines that were needed to till and amend the soil before planting. Discussions and lessons about perennial and annual plants and their needs for growth were held. Everyone agreed that we wanted a beautiful colorful welcome of flowers and plants as students and parents entered our school. Students also had to understand that the plants and flowers are for our enjoyment and should not be picked. Feet had to stay out of the garden area that was once an area where they could romp around because it wasn't developed. Now that we had planted, their feet had to stay on the sidewalk or the deck. Helpful insects like praying mantis and ladybugs were purchased and let loose to live in and help our garden. Many bulbs were planted so students had fun checking out the garden every morning to see where plants were now springing up.
Our PTA also purchased 3 trees, a crabtree, cherry tree and a plum tree that were added to our front lawn. They were presented to our student body on Earth Day and planted two days later. Students were so excited to see the planted trees and have started to show appreciation, enjoyment and understanding of the importance of nature all around us.
