PAPER TRAIL PROJECT
By:
We are a small school in a rural area. It's been hard to get recycling really going here. Our student council wanted to make students more aware of the need for recycling. Students on our Energy and Environment Committee continued to discuss ways to work with the entire campus on various recycling projects. The paper issue seemed to be one of the largest concerns. Our school, as most schools, especially our elementary campus, goes through enormous amounts of paper. After getting other clubs and organizations on the team with us on our campus and talking with the elementary campus and having their support, our team felt encouraged to go out and find a way to start THE PAPER TRAIL PROJECT.
First, we bought receptacles for our campus to get the paper trail going. We found a local recycler that comes every other week to pick up all of our paper. Our students really get into taking paper to the correct place. Students encourage other students to stop throwing paper away and put it in the right place. Announcements are made and posters hung to help remind the campus on what to do.
The council then purchased these receptacles for our elementary campus. This campus has a receptacle for each classroom. We were all very excited about making this move to help our elementary. This will only help educate students of the need for recycling and help them grow up into life-long recyclers! How exciting!
Our council would really like to emphasize that we are a small school and we did this! We want to encourage other small schools who think they may not have enough resources to do this project. You just have to start out with a team, show others you are excited about this project and get them to support your efforts.
Thank you for reading about our project. If you need any more information or help on starting a PAPER TRAIL at your school, email our advisor, Rita Clawson at clawsonr@ocisd.net
