Walk to school days are conducted periodically throughout the school year. For the past 4 years the school has recognized and participated in the International Walk to School Day in October. The event promotes safe routes to school and a healthy alternative to driving.

To announce the event, flyers are created and sent home with every student inviting not just students but teachers, parents and community leaders to join others across the world for the International Walk to School Day.

Signs are distributed in the school neighborhood announcing the “Walk to School Day” events and cautioning motorist to drive carefully! To further promote safety, children and adults are encouraged to walk with their friends in groups known as “Walking School Buses.” Most years the principal and other staff members join in the fun. When the walkers arrive at school they are rewarded with a sticker that says “I’m a Fernbank Walker.” This encourages other students to consider walking.

Throughout the year, students and parents are encouraged to carpool and when possible, walk to school. The students learn that walking saves energy, keeps the environment cleaner, provides a safer walking environment around the school and promotes healthy habits.
