Fernbank's Go Green Club

Go Green is a club for kids who are interested in learning about protecting the environment, recycling, and conservation.  This year, there are fifteen members. The club has been in place for the past 3 years.

During the first meeting of the Go Green club this year, the students and parent instructor talked about what "going green" means.  Some student ideas included recycling, gardening, picking up trash and keeping the environment clean, learning about ways to protect the environment and planting trees.  The group brainstormed ideas for activities throughout the year. 

One idea was to have a plant in every classroom.  So, in the next meeting, club members planted African violets into recyclable pots, using organic soil, and gave one plant to each classroom and the main office.  While the students were potting the plants, the instructor talked about why plants are important, what plants students have at and in their homes, and what color plants were liked.

The students took a tour of the school to locate all the recycling bins.  They decided that one project they would do this year was to paint signs or the bins themselves to make them more visible to students and to make recycling easier.

During another meeting, the students helped the Farm to School Committee clean up the school garden, including weeding, fertilizing, composting and general clean-up.

Plans for upcoming meetings include a talk by a sustainability expert and a trip to the Fernbank Nature Center which is located directly across the street from the school.

During one Go Green Club meeting, we planted violets for all the classrooms and the main office.
