Activity: Makapu'u Lighthouse Hike
With the purpose of burning calories, collecting trash and viewing the nature and wildlife, the Academy of the Pacific’s middle school and high school PE classes hiked to the Makapu'u Lighthouse on the island of O'ahu. With trash bags in hand, the classes visited the area on two consecutive days collecting 4-5 bags of trash and at the same time utilizing the vast panorama to watch pods of Humpback whales, dolphins and seals. The hike on the 8-10% grade in some areas, took a leisurely 60+ minutes. The area is frequented daily by hundreds of tourists as well as local inhabitants to view the incredible sites from its vantage points, but can get strewn with trash in different areas making for an unsightly environment. The city and county does cleanups in the area at times but we at AOP felt that we could make a contribution also by cleaning areas that were missed or had not been cleaned yet.

A good day was had by all, with each student burning a couple hundred calories in addition to gaining further appreciation for the wildlife in and around their state and leaving an area with some trashy spots looking pristine and natural.
