C3

By:

Another parent and myself decided we wanted to start a club that focuses on taking care of the world around us.

Thus, C3 was born at Chandler Oaks!

Mission statement:
The mission of C3 is to bring together the caring power of the Cheetahs to make a better community and world to grow up in.

Vision statement:
As C3 members, we strive to positively impact anything and everything we cross paths with, whether it be people of the community or the community itself.

This club was a bi monthly club, with one meeting focusing on caring for the community and one meeting focusing on caring for the environment.

As this was only our second year being open as a school, we opted to start in late January.

Some of the community focus we have done are the following:

We created Valentine's cards for a Nursing Home in our community, using construction paper, as well as various leftover pieces of paper from previous projects.

We created birthday boxes for Hope Alliance, a local nonprofit with the following mission: Developing partnerships and providing services that renew hope, highlight possibilities and change the futures of those whose lives have been affected by family and sexual violence.

The boxes were decorated by our club members then filled with donated toys so that children that were staying or involved with Hope Alliance would have a present for their birthday!

We also created Owls from empty toilet paper rolls and filled them with candy and provided them to all the Staff and Teachers at COE to show our appreciation.

We also hosted a book drive, again working to assist Hope Alliance.  We collected 339 books that we donated to the shelter, as well as a toy box that was hand decorated by our club members.

In order to care for our envrionment, we did the following:

We used the empty plastic containers from our cafeteria to make art so that we can see items can be reused, they don't always have to just be discarded.

We also ate fruit and then planted the seed from the fruit in cups to be grown.  This familiarizes the club members where food comes from and shows how easy it is to grow things that they love to eat.

We also used empty toilet paper rolls to create bird feeders.  This showed the students to again, reuse items, and to take care of the animals around us.

We also had a plastic bag drive for Earth day, collecting over 500 plastic bags that were recycled and kept out of land fills!!!

We also put on a skit for our school at Friday assembly, reminding the students that THEY have the power to make changes in their life to take care of our Earth!!

Lastly, we created WIND powered garden lights, in which the LED was powered by the blowing of the wind!!

Our website contains details of the club and we keep it updated so that parents know what is happening that week.

Lastly, we also gave out two sets of cards to students that we called "Caring Cards"

One card stated " You make my world a better place! Thanks for caring! I'll share the care!"

We requested that students give these cards to people that do kind things for them.  This encourages our club members to really think about people who are making an effort to do good.

The other stated: "You have been cared for by C3! Please share the care!"

This is to encourage students to stop and do things for others, especially ones that the care for, as well as those they might not know.

(All this was explained to the students with the understanding that they speak with their parents before giving out any cards, and the encouragement to have their parents be the HOLDERS of the cards for safety!!)

We were very excited about this club starting and are looking forward to doing even more GREAT things for our communithy and our environment!!

This club's co creator, Andrea M.,  also received the RRISD PTA Council Flower In Our Garden award for her work in this club!

As this was our first year, we weren't able to implement as much as we wanted to, so we have BIG plans on the horizon and are excitedly looking forward to 2012-13!!
