Lesson: Eat foods that are good for your body rather than junk foods and exercise often to maintain a healthy weight.
Healthy food: Eating right is the first step into maintaining a healthy body. Your body needs lots of nutrition to stay in shape. Every day you should eat about 2-3 servings of healthy protein, 2-4 servings of colorful fruit, 3-5 servings of vegetables, 6-11 servings of whole grains, and 2-3 servings of dairy. Eating healthy can lower cholesterol levels and lowers risk of having a heart disease or a heart attack.
Bad food: Eating unhealthy can cause more bad health problems than just obesity. In America 34% of adults are overweight and 34% are obese. 17% of children are overweight and 17% are obese.[1] Bad foods can contain bad fats, carbohydrates, and Trans fats.
Exercise: Exercise helps you look and feel better. It helps you maintain physical fitness and so you can maintain a healthy weight. Physical exercise also can build and maintain a healthy bone density, as well as joint mobility and muscle strength and promoting physiological well-being, reducing surgical risks, and strengthening the immune system.
Story: Bobbie is severely obese and she wants to lose weight because she is scared of possibly getting Type 2 diabetes. Bobbie needs to run to the healthy food while avoiding the tempting junk food so she can lose weight and stay healthy.
Type 2 diabetes: It’s important to keep your blood sugar controlled, because when too much sugar stays in your blood for a long time, it can damage blood vessels and nerves. Much of the food we eat is turned into sugar in the blood for our bodies to use for energy. A hormone produced by the pancreas called insulin helps sugar in our blood get into the cells of our bodies. If your body doesn’t make enough insulin or if the insulin doesn’t work the way it should, blood sugar can’t get into your cells and instead stays in your blood, raising your blood sugar level.[2]
Objective: Help Bobbie to get in shape by collecting all the points (Apples), avoiding the bad guys (French fry), and reaching the goal block!
