Heath Lesson: There are two types of proteins; complete and incomplete. Complete proteins have adequate amounts of all nine essential amino acids. You get them from products such as; fish, meat, poultry, egg, milk, cheese, and yogurt. Soybeans are also a good source of complete protein. Incomplete proteins are missing one or more essential amino acids.
Proteins are nutrients that help build and maintain body cells and tissues. Proteins are made of long chains of amino acids. Your body can proccess all but nine of the twenty different amino acids. The nine that your body can not make are called essential amino acids; you have to get them from food you eat.
Proteins work in many different ways, like during major growth periods such as; babies, children, adolescence, and pregnancy. Your body uses the amino acids in proteins to build new cells and tissues. Your body uses proteins to make enzymes, hormones, and antibodies. Proteins also give energy to your body, but they are not the main energy source.
