Green Hour and transportation
By:
In our Eco-school classes our students learned how important it is to get outside at least one hour per day. They discussed the health benefits, and made suggestions to how we could get outside more during our school day and at home.
One suggestion lead to the planting of several vegetable and herb gardens around our school. Another suggestion for increasing outdoor time was to look at how we come to school. We took a survey and found that 43% ride in vehicles (26% of those carpool), 31% ride the school bus, 16% walk, & 10% ride bikes. Students determined that more of them would walk to school if we could organize a walking school bus. Plans will be made to organize a walking school bus with the help of PTA, from the neighborhood that surrounds the school. Students also discussed bike safety and how riding their bikes can be fun, energizing and increase the amount of time they spend outside.
