Forest for learning

By:

The student tree journals and discussions about our schoolyard lead to an exciting event on our campus. Students began a creation of love as they organized a fundraising activity to sell trees that would be planted in our schoolyard to begin a forest for learning. They sold trees at our fall festival in November. Student families and community members purchased trees that were planted on our school grounds as the beginnings of an outdoor classroom. We planted 28 trees total and have plans to increase that number each year, turning our desolate field into a rich natural community. In May 4 large trees were donated by our PTA. Our school decided to use our energy savings rewards that the Hayscisd school district gives each campus for outstanding energy savings to purchase outdoor tables and benches for our classroom set in the forest. Students suggested that we add natural features like large boulders and a pond for discovery and outdoor investigation. We will continue to build upon kids dreams!
