Garden Food Drive
By:
Throughout the school year, Billy MItchell students harvest garden crops specifically for our local Lawndale food bank. We begin this project with a discussion about hunger. Not only in our city, but in our country and around the world. We talk about the different reasons people go hungry and I am always amazed how astute and aware these children are on this serious topic. Following our discussion and exploring a world map to point out locations in the world where hunger is a monumental issue, we begin to harvest our crops. There have been occasions when the food we collected was donated to one of our own families in need. Nothing warms my heart more than to witness the generosity of our students, who themselves have little, sharing their crops.
