Composting 101: City of Austin (Rebate Program)
Presented by: Daniela Ochoa
Capping off a week of Earth Day related events, Doss Elementary students, parents, and members of the neighborhood were treated to a special presentation by the City of Austin's Daniela Ochoa about home composting, and composting in the school's cafeteria.
Daniela presented a highly engaging, interactive and entertaining hour that taught both students and adults about the benefits of composting, how to make compost, "if it grows, it goes," importance of having a nitrogen and carbon balance, and the difference between home composting, and commercial composting process like the one used in the school cafeteria.
The morning presentation was attended by about 120 students, and 25 parents, teachers, and neighbors of Doss. Each adult received a complimentary Kitchen Compost Collector, credit for the class, and direction for completing the $75 rebate incentive for composting in the city of Austin. Each student received a booklet that extended the information presented by Ms. Ochoa. But, more importantly, our Doss students learned how to make less waste in our community's landfills by recycling food scraps from both the school cafeteria and kitchen's at home.
