Goal:  Promote understanding of the natural world through students' nature-oriented experiences that create fun and unique memories.

Overview

On Nov 17th first grade teachers organized a field trip to Green Gate Farms. Green Gate Farms is a small, family-run certified organic farm on Austin’s eastside; fresh vegetables, flowers, eggs and meats. Recently they created the New Farm Institute to increase their on-farm education programs.

People involved

Four (4) teachers and the curricular coordinator, one (1) member of the staff, three (3) parents, twenty-nine (29) students and the staff from Green Gate Farms.

Completed actions

- Tour of the farm, harvest and composting activities

- Campaign to support the CSA program at Green Gate Farms

Outcomes

- Students identified different types of soil

- Students, parents and staff participated in non-structured activities heightening awareness of the nature-based programs offered by Green Gate Farms.
