EATING LOCAL MATTERS! Here in Hawaii, we import most of our food which means we completely rely on the shipping, energy, and food industries to feed us.
So Kokua Hawaii has sponsored a Grow Hawaii Project for middle school science students throughout Hawaii to grow gardens and support eating local in our schools.
Last year, AOP middle school science students planted gardens at the school. This year, students were able to harvest items from the gardens, prepare delicious food in our kitchen and share it at the culminating all Grow Hawaii schools Pa'ina Event.
For the Pa'ina event, students prepared a presentation that they shared with the other students that told the story of their harvest and cooking experiences.
To encourage eating local, students participated in our school Eat Local Day. They marketed the event by creating posters to raise awareness about our island's Food Security issue as well as get the school excited about the delicious menu.
It was a tremendous success with all the local plates getting sold out that day! A Honolulu Star Advertiser news reporter came to our campus to talk to students and shared the story with our entire island community!
