Get Out Into Nature (Bird Nest Cylinder)
By:
Title of Lesson: Bird Nest Cylinder Grade level: 4th – 5th
Eco-school learning outcome: Discuss the importance of time outside in nature and understand the benefits of increased exposure to the natural world.
Materials/Equipment: A piece of ½ in hardware cloth (wire mesh screen) approximately 12 x 22 inches About 6 ft of 16-gauge wire, Cotton balls, Wire snips, Paper and pencil, scissors
Introduction: Birds cannot resist pulling the soft cotton from this holder for lining their nests. The white of the cotton makes it easy for you to track your feathered friends to their nests.
Procedures:
- Cut the hardware cloth in quarters with the wire snips to a 6x11-in piece and roll it into a cylinder.
- Using the wire, join the cylinder by weaving the wire in and out of the squares near the edges and tying it off at the end.
- To make a top and bottom for the cylinder, place it on the paper and trace around it with the pencil. Cut out the circle. Use this as a pattern to cut a top and a bottom from the remaining hard cloth. Wire the bottom onto the cyclinder and tie it off.
- Fill the cylinder with cotton balls, place the top on it and wire it into place.
- Make a hanger from extra wire and hang the cylinder where the birds will discover it and can reach it.
Product/Assessment/Evaluation: Each 4th and 5th grade students will complete a bird nest cylinder to install in their own backyard.
