Smithsonian SHOUT Tree-Banding Project
By:
The Smithsonian Institution's Tree Banding Project is an important ecological project that teams students and scientists to research about how trees respond to climate change. Students around the globe choose trees on their school campus, band, and monitor therate at which their local trees grow. In time, we'll learn how the growth rate of our trees corresponds to Smithsonian research as well as the research of other students world-wide.
This Spring the Eco Heroes class selected 10 trees that possess fairly smooth bark and a single
trunk to and a bit above the circumference measurement line (approximately 1.3 meters). We also chose a variety of tree species. We found that the largest trees on our schoolyard were too large for the equipment provided. Two measurements are taken each spring and fall. We'll enter ourdata on their website this fall.
The Smithsonian Institution's Tree Banding Project is part of Shout, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution, TakingITGlobal and Microsoft Partners in Learning.
