- What is the name of your project: National Engineer’s Week Future City Competition - 2012 Theme - Rethink Runoff: Design Clean Solutions to Manage Stormwater Pollution
- What is the goal/purpose of the project: “This flexible, cross-curricular educational program gives students an opportunity to do the things that engineers do—identify problems; brainstorm ideas; design solutions; test, retest and build; and share their results. This process is called the engineering design process. With this at its center, Future City is an engaging way to build students’ 21st century skills. Students participating in Future City:
- Apply math and science concepts to real-world issues
- Develop writing, public speaking, problem solving, and time management skills
- Research and propose solutions to engineering challenges
- Discover different types of engineering and explore careers options
- Learn how their communities work and become better citizens
- Develop strong teamwork skills “ (futurecity.org/About, 2012)
- Who will be involved in the project: Grade 8 students, parents, teachers, mentors for the preparation and Grades Pre-K – 8 as presentation audience.
- How will you record the project (video, photos, PowerPoint, etc.): Video, Photos, Blog
- Do you have a budget for your project? How will you attain those finances? The competition registration is $25 and is paid for by the school. Students are encourages to use mainly recycled items to build their scale model.
- What is the starting and ending date of your project? Start date: 9/20/12 – 1/12/13
