2012-13 Greenprint Fuentes Earth Savers

Our Mission at Fuentes Elementary is  to empower responsible scholars and grow exceptional global citizens through purposeful, meaningful and unique educational experiences.

Our campus Greenprint, evolves each year into actions that have an incredible power and positive impact on our community. Fuentes Elementary has developed a school culture where global citizenship is embedded in instruction, practice, and interconnected partnerships, to ensure students make decisions based on what is best for our future, our world.

There will be additional events and learning opportunities throughout the year. This is only our skeleton plan. Earth Savers
class lesson plans will be attached as projects are completed as will photos and other resources.

Greenprint 2012-13

8/19-21 (Natural classrooms) Professional Development & Leadership: All Fuentes teachers and staff will participate in a 2 day and 1 night retreat at McKinney Roughs Nature Preserve. The by participating in river rafting trip, wildlife identification, video scavenger hunt, etc our teachers will be able to motivate and engage their students in outdoor learning and promote Earth Savers ideals and lesson throughout the curriculum and on a consistent basis in all classrooms.

9/4 through 5/10 (Health & Fitness)Fitness & Physical Education: School wide student special interest after school clubs. (Beginning Dance Club, Intermediate Dance Club, Advanced Dance Club, Horse Vaulting Club, Jump Rope Club)

9/4 through 5/10 (Health & Fitness)Healthy Lifestyles, Nutrition & Healthy Eating, Fitness:  “Fuentes Fun Fit and Fine,” A proactive health club for teachers and staff that promotes healthy choices, education, and many fitness events throughout the year. Incentive rewards and fun events as well as educational personal development.

9/6/2012 (Eco-Campus and Helath & Fitness) Energy, Transportation, Recycle/Waste, Healthy Lifestyles: Safety Audit of Campus All students and staff members will participate in a safety audit of our campus. We will look at the healthy choices we make, energy management, facility use and upkeep, and general safety measures we take to provide an optimal learning and working environment for all.

9/10-10/25 (All Cornerstones) Planning, organizing, and creating earth saver projects for our new Eco-event. The Earth Savers Summit is a new community event featuring Fuentes Elementary school wide efforts to empower students to be responsible global citizens. Students began working on the event 9/10/2012. The event is scheduled for 10/25/2012 at HAYSCISD Performing Arts. The Earth Savers Summit will include Kindergarten "Litter Bugs" artwork made of recycled materials, 1st grade writing and artwork about how each person can make a
difference in our world, 2nd grade banner and promises to grow as eco-conscious citizens who take action to change our community, 3rd grade slide show highlighting what each of us can do to be more green and to make healthier choices, 4th grade Eco-aware science projects, 5th grade Eco-science fair, 5th grade Eco-poetry, 5th grade musical "Update Earth", K-5 artwork featuring reusable and recyclable materials, and K-5 pen pal letters to students in Kenya about how if we all work together as responsible global citizens we can have a better world.

9/17-24 (Eco-Campus) Transportation: Earth Savers Class focus will be transportation. Lessons will help students learn about and implement effective road safety awareness. Students will view a power point about road signs and safety. They will discuss what they know about various street signs and what they are for and why they
are necessary. The students will also view and discuss pedestrian, bicyclist and drivers safety using Kagan cooperative strategies. Students will watch a video about safety and then take a quiz about what they learned.

9/25-10/2 (Eco-Campus & Health & Fitness) Transportation Earth Savers class focus will be on making healthy transportation choices. Walk or ride your Bike to School Day project. Prepare for, publicize and implement an effective road safety awareness program for students and their families for Walk to School Day. Students will plan and create posters and announcements for Walk to School event.

10/2/2012 (Natural Classrooms)Nature Curricula & Stewardship: Author Visit Lola Schaefer (Nature and non-fiction) All students participate in author visit by grade level. Topic focus …Nature, Stewardship and Writing.

10/4-12 (Natural Classrooms)Stewardship: The Earth Savers Classes will focus on global dimensions to raise student awareness of the links between students' lives and the lives of others throughout the world. By engaging our students with students in other cultures we will facilitate understanding and empathy and make a world a smaller place where interconnected partnerships have positive impact on our future. Students will view a slideshow presentation to look at photos and learn about students in Kenya. Discuss and brainstorm what pen pal letters might contain.

10/15-19 (Health & Fitness)Healthy Lifestyle: Red Ribbon Week Activities each day to promote healthy life choices

10/20/2012 (Health & Fitness)Nutrition & Healthy Eating: Begin community service project connecting FES families and community with local growers for fresh fruits and vegetables as part of a food coop that delivers to our school on Saturday mornings.

10/16-23 (Natural Classroom)Stewardship: the Earth Savers Classes will focus on global citizenship. They will write letters and draw pictures for their pen pals in Kenya. These letters will be scanned and sent electronically to Kenya
Connect.

10/23/2012 (Nature Adventure)Exploration & Play: Kindergarten trip to Kyle  Gregg Park Clark for “Police in the Park” presentation and picnic and play.

10/25/2012 (All Cornerstones) Earth Savers Summit Event

10/26/2012 (Natural Classroom, Health & fitness, Eco-Classroom)Hallowgreen: Seats and Treats school wide event co-hosted by PTA. Emphasizing healthy choices, consumption, recycling and reusing.

11/1/2012 (Health & Fitness) Nutrition & Healthy Eating: Fueling Fuentes Families is a new project at our school. We collect donations as part of a “Turkey Legs Contest “ staff members take part in. The money will be used to buy healthy foods to feed some of our Fuentes families who are homeless and in need of assistance. We hope to provide healthy recipes and ingredients for Thanksgiving and Winter Break.

11/5-12 (Eco-Campus)Energy: the Earth Savers Classes will focus on energy. Students will learn about the role energy plays in everyday life, at home, school and in transportation choices. Students will discuss and collaborate to make
recommendations of how we can make our school and homes more energy efficient. Teachers and students will read book Saving Energy by Charlotte Gullian then students will create a 3 tab foldable about “Types of Energy”

11/13-27 (Eco-Campus) Energy: The Earth Savers classes will continue lessons focused on energy, the various types and what we can do to conserve and even use alternative methods to provide clean energy.

11/29-12/7 (Eco-Campus) Pollution: Earth Savers classes will look closely at pollution and how it affects our community and our world.

12/4/2012 (Nature Adventure)Exploration & Play: 1st graders will spend time at Buda Park exploring in nature followed by an outdoor picnic.

12/10-17 (Eco-Campus)Pollution and Climate Change:  Earth Savers classes will be able to identify various forms of climate change all over the world. They will create stories about climate change and come up with solutions
for reducing our carbon footprint.
