Energy Audit

MIS Green Team

Compiled by Sayuri Yamanaka

I           What we did

On March 31st Magellan International School invited a representative from Austin Energy to do an energy Audit to get recommendations regarding energy efficiency. The results of the audit are displayed in the next table.

II         Outcomes

III        What we accomplished

  • With the students

Evaluate the consumption of energy

Identify the areas where the school could make changes or adaptation to reduce the consumption of energy

  • With the school community

Launched a global-warming campaign to promote energy savings and reduce carbon emissions

List of recommendations by Energy Austin:

  1. Find out how each thermostat is programmed.  They should all be programmed for comfortable temperature during school hours and energy-saving temperature during off hours.  They should be programmed to start at slightly different times, to avoid all of them starting simultaneously in the morning.
  2. Be sure to replace all air filters at least once a quarter (including 1st and 3rd grade rooms)
  3. Find out the age and SEER rating of the HVAC equipment (consult PALEFACE heat & air conditioning Inc.)
  4. Replace the T12 fluorescent tubes for T8 tubes (including electronic ballast) in girls' and boys' restrooms and 1st and 3rd grade rooms.
  5. Shut down when not in use (lamps consumes a lot of energy and generates a lot of heat).
  6. Keeps doors closed to prevent AC escape (do not use mats to prop door open)
  7. Window tinting reduces absorption of heat from the sun.
