Title: Transportation Lesson 2/ Walk to School Day project
Grade: K-5
Date: 9/25/12- 10/2/12
Materials: Large poster size paper, crayons, markers and pencils (if they choose) and a teacher’s sample.
Objective: Planning and implementation of an effective road safety awareness program for students and their families for Walk to School Day. Students planned event and made posters to promote Walk to School Day. The posters were hung throughout the campus.
Procedures: The class began with an intro to what Walk to School Day is and when it will take place. After a planning discussion, the class was split up into groups of 4-6 depending on class size. Each group received poster paper, crayons, and markers. (The older kids like to draw out their ideas before putting marker or crayons to the paper). Emphasis on originality and information. Slogans were catchy, clever and cool. Some ideas students used were:
- Ditch the Ride, Walk on the Side
- Walk to School ‘Cuz you Think it’s Really Cool
- All the Way, Everyday
- Stop, Look and Listen (with the stop sign, then eyes and ears as symbols to border the poster)
- Hike it, Bike it, I like It!!!
The slogan was emphasized as the main focus by making sure the students drew large, bold letters in the center of the
poster. Once the slogan was posted, the students used the rest of the space to make designs, patterns and/or pictures to make the poster look fun and exciting. They used strret signs from previous transportation lesson as well. When the posters were completed, all of the posters were hung in their own grade level hallways . All of the extra posters will be hung in the purple hallways, cafeteria, gym, office, nurse’s office, restrooms, custodial areas, all the portables and car rider pick up area outside.
Assessment/Evaluation: Students should participate fully in groups to plan event and to come up with the ideas for posters on their own with little help from the teacher.
