San Marcos River
By:
4th grade students learned about the history of our community and how it began as
far back as the Tonkawa Native Americans. Students were able to make the
connection of their presence to our River, The San Marcos River and realized
how important the river is to us and living creatures in it. They researched
endangered species in the San Marcos River such as the Blind Salamander,
Fountain Darter, and Texas Wild Rice. The group walked to our local education
center where the students were able to test the quality of water and observed
the endangered species in person. The students were then able to educate
students in our school that the San Marcos River that flows through our town is
much more than a recreation place for San Marcos residents and college students.
The students also researched invasive species in our river and were then able
to make movies using their iPads educating peers about what is going on in our
river. The idea that we need to care for our river to preserve the environment
was well communicated.
