Outdoor Classroom
By:
At Rainbow Mountain, we have created a space for outdoor learning.
As part of that process, we used fallen trees to create stumps that are arranged in a circular fashion.
This hearkens back to the ways of the Native American Indians who would have discussions within their communities by sitting in a circle.
This area is dubbed, "The Council Circle" to enhance our outdoor learning experiences.
The result is that we foster a community learning environment. Students learn to use their voices to make themselves heard, but also, they listen and respect other students' perspectives.
The fact that this is part of our outdoor classroom creates an appreciation for the peace that classrooms and students can find outside and increases mutual respect for fellow humans and for the planet.
This space also creates the perfect atmosphere to write nature poetry, talk about issues concerning the environment, and much more.
