Walking for Water
By:
During the week of World Water Day 2013, our students participated in various water conservation activities. We explored the website Walking for Water and watched a couple of videos that showed how the water that we often take for granted is actually a very limited resource in other parts of the world. We explored the website and learned about various water conservation projects going on in other countries. Our students decided that throughout the week, we would collect any spare change we could come up with and they decided to donate to one of the projects listed. Many of the lessons in the environmental classes involved water conservation and helped reinforce the ideas discussed in the Life Skills classes. At the end of the week, we hosted our own "Walking for Water" activity. Each student left the school with an empty 5 gallon bucket and we walked for 20 minutes until we reached a local pond. At this point, each student had to fill their bucket and then we proceeded to walk back to the school. At the end of our walk, our students finally understood the hardships faced by those from other cultures who walk long distances each day in order to gather clean water for their families.
