Walk for Diabetes
By:
Each year our entire school participates in Walk for Diabetes. PE coaches teach kids about healthy eating and information about how to prevent diabetes for a few weeks before the event. The kids then raise money by getting pledges from family and friends to walk or run laps on our Walk for Diabetes Day. This year our school ran the equivalent of 774 miles and raised $8,660 for the American Diabetes Association. As a reward students reached a school goal of running more than 3000 laps and got to "duct tape" the assistant principal and principal to the wall!!
School Walk for Diabetes is a school based public awareness and fundraising program that takes a fun and proactive approach to educating youth and their families on the positive effects of healthy choices as it relates to diabetes. Due to the alarming fact that nearly 19,000 children are newly diagnosed with diabetes annually, the need for education is imperative!
By exposing children to information about healthy living, they are empowered to take these tools and implement them into their everyday lives while raising awareness in support of our fight against diabetes. One of the greatest aspects of SchoolWalk for Diabetes is the flexibility of the program. Each school plans its own event and makes the decision about what will work best for its students.
