Hutsell Elementary held it's 7th annual "Take Me Fishing Hutsell" event at Mary Jo Peckham Park in Katy on Saturday, March 23, 2013. "Take Me Fishing Hutsell" is a community wide event, supported by Texas Parks & Wildlife who stocked the pond with catfish. This year, students caught more than 25 fish. This event provides third, fourth and fifth grade students and their families an opportunity to participate in the following activities. Fishing (all fish are weighed and measured), making a fish print (Gyotaku,a Japenese word for fish print) t-shirt, knot- tying and camping where they made friendship bracelets and homemade ice-cream. A live display of turtles was also available for students to observe. Approximately 600 people attended this year, including volunteers and community members such as the Mayor of Katy. It is supported by donations by the Katy Rotary Club, Brazos Valley Credit Union and various community businesses. Donations are used to buy rod and reel combos to be given to the students. At the end of the event, students are encouraged to keep their environment clean. They're given a plastic bag to clean-up around the pond and the student who collects the most trash wins a prize.
