Presidential Physical Fitness Test (PPFT)
By:
Eisenhower Physical Education classes were given the Presidential
Physical Fitness Test as part of our data collection for showing student growth
in the Physical Education curriculum. The students were pre and post tested on
the number of push-ups they could do in one minute, the number of pull-ups they
could complete, the number of curl-ups they can complete in one minute, the
distance a student can reach on the fourth attempt and hold for 3 seconds
during a sit and reach and the time it takes them to complete one mile during
the endurance walk/run. The Specific criteria for each of the five activities
are listed at https://www.presidentschallenge.org/challenge/physical/activities/index.shtml
For push-ups, individual students were tested in the fall and then again at
mid-term time. We then calculated the individual student's percent improvement.
Reported below is the class total push-ups at pre-test and the total at
post-test. We then divided the difference between the two numbers by the original number to get the percent increase. The same procedure for calculations were followed for the curl-ups, pull-ups, and time for the endurance walk/run.
Results: Total class percent increase for above activities.
push-ups: 37% increase in the number within one minute.
pull-ups: 43.9% increase in the number.
curl-ups:15.47% increase in the number within one minute.
sit and reach: 10.37% increase in flexibility.
endurance walk/run: 44.28% decrease in the amount of time needed to complete 1 mile.
