America Recycles Day 2012
By:
Since 1997, communities across the country have come together on November 15 to celebrate America Recycles Day. More than a celebration, America Recycles Day is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to the promotion of reycling in the United States. One day to educate and motivate, one day to get our neighbors, friends and community leaders excited about what can be accomplished when we all work together. One day to make recycling bigger and better 365 days a year.
Many communities offer curbside recycling for plastic, but do not include plastic bags. Plastic bags are recycled into products like low-maintenance fencing, backyard decks, benches, and new bags. About 89 billion plastic bags, sacks, and wraps are used each year in the U.S. According to the EPA, the category of plastics, which includes bags, sacks, and wraps was recycled at 9 percent in 2009.
This is the second year our school has been involved in America Recycles Day. Students from Pre-K3 through 8th grade were very excited and worked together to collect 4,752 plastic shopping bags (70 lbs.) that were brought back to Publix for recycling by members of our green team.
