Earth Week Electronics Recycling

By:

  • Schuylerville Central School District co-sponsored an Electronics Recycling Program with Greenwich Central School District.  The Electronics Recycling was held April 20, 2013 as part of numerous Earth Week Activities.  The purpose of this activity was to ensure that all electronics are properly disposed and recycled.  Objects were collected by an established electronics’ recycling company.

CORE CURRICULUM CONNECTION:

NYS Living Environments Learning Standard 4: Students will understand and apply scientific concepts, principles, and theories pertaining to the physical setting and living environment and recognize the historical development of ideas in science. Key Idea 7: Human Decisions and activities have had a profound impact on the physical and living environment.

PLANNING:

Locate a company that will collect and haul away all the electronics and recycle them for free.

Select a date and time -  a Saturday in April was chosen to kick-off Earth Week activities.

Publish a list of acceptable items for collection.

Promote the event to all members of the community via e-mail, Facebook, the districts' websites and hanging posters at in the schools and the community.  Note: by co-sponsoring this event with a neighboring school district, we were able to reach  more people.

EXECUTION:

Set-up collection area and provide signage and directions. (See above picture) Student volunteers provided a personalized touch and guided cars to the collection area and assisted with the collection of the recycleables.

RESULTS:

Over 100 cars dropped off recycleables and we collected 25,545 lbs of electronics in 4 hours.  These items will be kept out of landfills and properly recycled.

Given how successful the event was, we plan to keep the collection site open for a week with a dumpster at the school.  Additionally, we are hoping to draw in more people in neighboring communities.

(Please note: all of GRS activities are also posted on the Schuylerville Green Ribbon School Project Facebook Page.)
