Pathways Community School Greenhouse!
By:
Pathways Community School of the Multnomah Education Service District, grew many different flowers, vegetables and ornamental plants with the help of students and staff! Once grown, flowers and vegetables were available for purchase by staff members, students or community members!
Staff and students began the year by planning needs for this year's greenhouse. Staff brought in soil, packets of seeds, donations of existing plants from neighborhood gardens, seed trays and fertilizer. Students and staff planted green leaf lettuce, red leaf lettuce, sweet peas, radish, bell peppers, cayenne peppers, jalepeno, sunflowers, nasterzia , dahlias, begonias, zinnias, marigolds, sweet basil, heritage basil, thyme, corsica mint (ground cover), oregano, spider plants, hen & chicks, and tomatoes!
Throughout the year, students and staff planted, tended and watered the plants; harvesting when blooming or producing! Several sales were held throughout the year with many staff and community members purchasing plants at $1 per plant for consumption or planting in their own yards! Students and staff used the proceeds to maintain and add to the PCS Greenhouse. At times, students were even able to consume the fruits of their labor!
At the end of the school year, staff held one final sale to clean out the greenhouse for the next school year. PCS will revisit the greenhouse in the Fall of 2013 with the help of the proceeds! Additionally, many students and staff will tend the plants they bought from the PCS greenhouse over the summer at their own homes.
