Garden Supplies Galore
By:
Now that we have our gardens going and growing, we need more tools and supplies to work and maintain them. We applied for a Junior League of Dallas: Grants for Innovative Teaching grant last April 2013. Our grant request was for $1,996.08 to purchase needed gardening supplies from Home Depot. Fortunately, our grant was accepted, and on September 25, 2013 the Teacher Recognition Ceremony and Reception was held at The Perot Museum of Nature and Science. We received our check and were ready to pick up all of our supplies.
We were able to purchase the following:
6 kids shovels 6 kids rakes
6 gel grip cultivators 6 gel grip transplanters
pvc tees, pipes, elbows for 11 structures 6 tomato cages
12 plankets 8 rubber hoses (50 and 75 feet)
1 dump cart 1 steel cart
6 packages of weedblock 15 packages of fabric pegs
20 pairs of gloves 2 kid-size wheelbarrows
3 hose holders
Students had fun unpacking and setting up our tools in the shed and around our garden.
The pvc materials will be used to construct 11 rectangular prisms covered with plankets. We have enough materials to make 11 structures that will be used to cover our 11 beds during freezing weather. Fourth and fifth grade students will measure each bed to make sure each structure will fit appropriately. That activity is explained in our "Planket, Planket, Who Needs a Blanket?" project. Check it out.
