Wheelbarrow and Carts Parking Lot
By:
We have an area surrounded by cinderblocks that was originally used as a compost area. Our PTA purchased a compost barrel later that we use for fresh fruits, vegetables, coffee grounds, eggshells, etc. On the other side of the barrel between the two portables, we have piles of leaves, sticks, shredded paper, etc. that we add to the compost barrel. So we decided to use the enclosed area as our wheelbarrows and carts parking lot. There is also an old table that is used for prep work.
But before we could park all of our vehicles there we had to clear it out. We had a compost pile that had to be moved, so students got to work. They probably filled the wheelbarrow 10 times and moved the dead plants to the new compost area. They got so excited when they came across families of lizards living in the piles of leaves.
After the area was cleared, they set down cardboard on top of the weeds and grass. Then old bricks were placed on top of the cardboard. We added stepping stones that led from one entry way to the other.
Then it was time to add our carts and barrels.
Weed control is a little easier, and it is not so muddy after a rain. There is also plenty of room for storing other items.
The cinderblock walls look blah during the winter. There is very little color in the garden around that area before our perennials start to bloom, so students will be creating tiles of mosaic nature designs that will be adhered to the walls during our Real School Garden Big Dig Day on May 3rd. Our garden area is perking up!
