A Tree Grows in Dallas
By:
An acorn has sprouted and an exploration begins. Alla, teacher of the Hungry Caterpillar class, discovered a sprouted acorn in the yard and brought it to school. She asked, "what can we do with this"?
First, we brainstormed what this plant needs to grow and we came to the conclusion that it needs soil and water. So, we went to the garden and found a pot in which to plant the acorn. Each of the children placed a handful of soil into the container. Then Alla placed the sprouted acorn into the soil. We gave the plant a drink of water and talked about what it will do over the summer.
The children said it will grow. We decided to measure the plant to see how tall it was when we planted the acorn. First, the children predicted the height of the sapling. Lily said "10 inches", Phillip said "5 inches", and Adielle said, "6 inches". We recorded the actual height as 7 inches tall. The teachers will help the summer campers to measure the growth each month and record the change.
We then asked, "will you grow over the summer?" They all said "yes". Each child was measured and the height was recorded.
When the children return in the fall, they will be measured again, and the data will be compared to the original measurements taken in May. They will compare the rate of growth of the acorn sapling and of themselves.
