Outdoor Classroom - Council Circle
By: RMCA
Students and staff alike at Rainbow Community School take part in the outdoor classroom, dubbed The Council Circle by students in the 2012-2013 school year.
They head outside for every classroom subject: Math, Science, Writing, Language Arts, Spanish and more.
Sometimes they head to the bigger campus playground and find a spot, or they head to The Council Circle. Here, students can also participate in mindful centering as a class.
The Council Circle was, like Rainbow Community School's playground, constructed using trees (locust) that were already dead. The center part of the circle always remains mulched to allow for ease of walking.
The stumps allow students to investigate nearby items, such as the garden, water measurements in rain barrels, participate in an outdoor activity in the Outdoor Classroom and then return to Council Circle for reflection.
