Snowflake Challenge
By:
- The 2nd Annual Snowflake Challenge
- In February 2014, Schuylerville GRS issued the 2nd annual Snowflake Challenge. The purpose of this activity is to motivate Schuylerville Elementary School children and their families to experience the fun and health benefits related to exercise and playing outside (even as the screens beckon and the temperatures drop in the last couple of months of winter).
-
CORE CURRICULUM CONNECTION:
NYS Health and Physical Education and Family and Consumer Sciences Learning Standard 1- Personal Health and Fitness: Students will have the necessary knowledge and skills to establish and maintain physical fitness,
participate in physical activity, and maintain personal health. - We encouraged children and their families to build a snowman, ski, sled, make snow angels, have a snowball fight, go snowshoeing...the possibilities and benefits were endless!
EXECUTION OF CHALLENGE:
To reward the children for their commitment to get outside and play, we gave each K-5 child who signed up for the challenge, a zipper tag to display on their ski coats. It was amazing how much the children loved the Snowflake Challenge zipper tags (as evident in the picture below, they proudly displayed them on their coats!).
RESULTS OF CHALLENGE:
The challenge was a huge success. We had over 250 students participate in the challenge and we received numerous reports from parents that the children were more motivated to getting outside and playing because they had made the commitment.
