America Recycles Day 2013
By:
America Recycles Day is celebrated on November 15th. It is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to the promotion of recycling in the United States. One day to educate, motivate, and get neighbors, friends, and community leaders excited about what can be accomplished when we all work together.
This is the third year our school has been involoved in America Recyles Day. Students from Pre-K3 through 8th grade were very excited and more than doubled last years collection of 4,752 plastic bags (70lbs) by collecting 177 1/2 pounds of bags--approximately 12,000 plastic bags !!!
We feel this is an important event. Many communitities offer curbside recycling for plastic, but do not include plastic bags. Plastic bags are recycled into products like low-maintance fencing, backyard decks, benches, and new bags. About 89 billion plastic bags, sacks, and wraps are used each year in the U.S. According to the EPA, the category of plastics, which includes bags, sacks, and wraps was recycled at 9 percent in 2009.
