Easter Basket Project

The Academy of Saint Paul students provide service for many outside organizations focusing on not only helping others, but also on conserving resources and supporting sustainability. Students understand that conserving resources is not only good for the environment and earth, but allows for increased production using fewer resources thus saving money.
The Grade 7 students lead the annual school wide Easter Basket project in conjunction with the St. Paul Parish Social Concerns Committee. The students collect funding to assemble approximately one hundred Easter baskets for students in need in the Archdiocese of Newark.
The Academy of Saint Paul students purchased paper Easter eggs for a donation of one dollar each. The paper Easter eggs were displayed in the cafeteria. The proceeds of the sale were used to purchase the Easter Baskets, cellophane bags, chocolate bunnies, and candy.
After the previous year’s project, there were some bags of left over grass. However, there was not enough grass to complete this year’s project. In order to make use of recycled paper and save money, the students decided to recycle/reuse paper collected in the recycling bin as lining for the bottom of the baskets. Students shredded the recycled paper and lined each basket with the shredded paper and covered with a small amount of grass to make the baskets attractive.
