Why Cormorants Stand Like This

By: IACP Kids

by Caleb, age 9

[image] Cormorant Drying Wings

This big black bird is called a cormorant.

He is standing like that because he just went swimming and catching fish. I learned that he gets all his food by diving.

After he is done eating he has to spread out his wings so the sun can dry them.

If they do not dry his feathers will stay all wet because he doesn't have enough of some kind of oil in them and he needs that to be waterproof.

After he is dry he will dive back into the ocean and catch more fish.
