America Recycles Day 2014
America Recycles Day is celebrated on November 15th. Since the 15th was on a weekend, Ascension celebrated on Wednesday, November 19, 2014. This is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to the promotion of recycling in the United States. One day to educate, motivate, and get neighbors, friends, and community leaders excited about what can be accomplished when we all work together.
This is the 4th year our school has been involved in America Recycles Day. Students from PreK-3 through 8th grade are asked to bring backs in from home. Many ask family and neighbors to save bags for them.
We feel this is an important event for our students to participate in. Many communitities offer curbside recycling for plastic, but do not include plastic bags. Plastic bags are recycled into products like low-maintance fencing, backyard decks, benches, and new bags. About 89 billiion bags, sacks, and wraps are used each year in the U.S. According to the EPA, the category of plastics, which includes bags, sacks, and wraps was recycled at 9 percent in 2009.
November 1st signs are placed on entrance doors and throughout the building
November 15th or designated day, the students bring in bags to the classroom. A teacher and 2 or 3 students go to each classroom and weigh the bags. Several students are asked to collect the bags right after lunch and build a tower against the wall in the cafeteria so everyone can see how many bags are collected. A total of 75 pounds of plastic bags was collected, which totals approximately 5000 bags. The top 3 classes were Mrs. P's 5th grade with 14 pounds, Ms. G's with 9.5, and Ms. R's with 9.5.
