SYVCS JOG A THON/ CARNIVAL
By:
The Jog-a-thon is a special event that Santa Ynez Valley Charter School does each year. This year we made it different by having 5th through 8th grade students set a goal in the beginning of the month of what their goals were to complete in the 30 minute time period.
Each glass grades K-8 also used the month prior to train for this event. Students were taught pacing, breathing strategies, and how to recognize symptoms of extreme fatigue or dehydration. Not only is this a fundraising event for our school but we also enhanced students’ performance from previous years on overall laps completed. After a warm up lap each group went through a dynamic warm up with agility and stretching to prevent injuries.
In conjunction with the Jog-a-thon we also have a school carnival on the same day. This year the school raised over $15,000 and students cumulatively ran just about 400 miles.
The biggest accomplishment of the day was watching students reach a goal they did not know they were capable of completing. Some students were unable to run a full lap when westarted the process.
