Eat This NOT That
By:
We first began our "Eat This Not That" Campaign by looking up some of the students favorite foods/snacks in the famous Eat This Not That book for kids. My students quickly observed how several of the items chosen had poor nutritional values. We then had a class discussion where the students and I brainstormed various foods in which we believed held high nutritional value.
Once the list was generated the students then chose the vegetable/fruit they would like to plant and research. Each student then researched the fruit or vegetable of their choice. The students researched the life cycle as well as healthy facts that they believed should be shared. The students took the information obtained and created digital posters which were available for display campus-wide.
Several of the students were also able to plant some of the vegetables of their choice. Journals were kept, so that the children could keep track of the growing process on a weekly basis.
Here are various examples of the "Eat This Not That" Digital Posters created by various 1st Graders: Angel, Jonas, Alyssa, Alexa
Here are varous pictures of students planting their own seeds, which they observed growing in class and were able to take home at the end of the school year.
Overall, the students had a great time growing their own vegetables and at the end of the year we put together a small recipe book with simple nutritional recipes that could be made at home with their families.
