Active4Me - Motivating Students to Bike, Walk, and

By:

Active4.me is a new program Bryker Woods Elementary School adopted in January 2016.

Our last partner (Boltage) no longer was in business and our school made it a priority to find another program due to the high volume of family participation.  Since the Fall of 2010 biking, walking, or scooting to school has been a part of our health and wellness program for students.  Finding another business to support our program took several months and while we waited, students were encouraged at weekly assembly to continue their level of particiaton as the company allowed for families to track their walks from previous months.

Since January 25, 2016 our students have achieved the following:

37,056 Calories Burned

871 Car Trips Removed

926 Miles Logged

811.0 LBS of CO2 Averted

Below is the communication that was sent to families to restart with the new program:

ZAP (formerly Boltage) PROGRAM OVERVIEW

ZAP is a bike, walk, and move to school program whose mission is to make walking and biking to school a way of life. We are challenging every student at Bryker Woods to move to school by biking, scootering, walking the entire way, or even parking a few blocks from school and walking.

ABOUT BW ZAP

Bryker Woods ZAP is a program that encourages kids to ride bike and walk to school by counting trips, tracking mileage and recognizing participation with rewards and fun events! Participants can pick up a backpack tag in the school office. Kids scan their tag at the Zap (located @ front of school) each day they bike or walk to school. Those trips are counted and tracked for various rewards and recognition.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

First you will need a ZAP rfid tag and attach it to your backpack. When you arrive at school via ANYWAY but by car, park your bike if you have one, and walk under the ZAP pole at the front entryway of the school. You will know that you've been "ZAPped" when you hear a bell, and see the light on the ZAP flash. Online, your unique tag will register every trip you make using alternative transportation (other than by car)! Once students are registered online for the ZAP program, that unique number on their tag will match up with their name, and they can keep track of how many trips they've made. Students challenge themselves!

HOW DO YOU REGISTER?

Once you pick up your tag from the office, parents register your students online at https://bykerwoods.active4.me/ . In order for the ZAP Program to work properly, it is critical that all participants register. The tags are ready and will be scanned and recorded immediately, however they won't be able to communicate personal participation information until the tag is registered.

REGISTER NOW!

PLEASE READ THIS!!! Your student won't be able to scan at the Zap or track trips online until they are registered! Fill in the registration form online, print this form, drop off in the PTA box in the office, OR take a photo of the form and email it to us at jcdaustin@gmail.com. ONCE WE HAVE THE SIGNED FORM, we can link the tag to your student and they will be ready to scan at the Zap! Start by clicking the green "register" button at the bottom left of this page.

Keep on moving Panthers!
