Project Title: Natural Classroom-garden to cafeteria, seed swap, worm tea
Natural Classroom-seed swap,garden to cafeteria

This student leadership group consisted of 3 motivated sixth grade students. They were involved in the garden each Wednesday. During this garden club time, at lunch, they were instrumental in harvesting food, washing, and delivering it to our cafeteria. This year they harvested:swiss chard, kale, calendula flowers, artichokes, christmas lima beans, mulberries, and much more. This food was in turn put in our cafeteria menu. Our garden is maintained by David White and a group of volunteers. They are also part of the nonprofit group, "Food for Thought". We got to eat pasta, salads and yummy soups from our harvest. What a delicious way to eat our lunch!
Enjoying time under the mulberry tree, they were so good!
This group was also involved in the selling of our worm tea. Garden club collects the worm casings, bags them in small bags, and adds a recipe ( mix 1 cup with a gallon of water) . These were sold outside of the school, at Open House, and Fall Festival. They are great for a natural food for your plants. We have an award winning worm bin!
Those are compostable trays in the bin. Our Food for Thought organization helps support these trays at lunch. We no longer use styrofoam trays!
We are involved in an Ojai Seed Swap each year. We harvest our own seeds, decorate seed packages, and then swap seeds with the rest of the Ojai Valley. This is a fun activity at our weekly garden club.
With a great team of volunteers in the garden club, and a trained chef in our cafeteria we are able to enjoy fresh harvest, learn about the value of worm casings, and swap our seeds for ones we need!
