Walk and Roll to School

Walk and Roll to School
Montecito Union School has worked hard over the years to establish and sustain a healthy lifestyle on campus. This year we implemented the Walk and Roll to School program to encourage a healthy lifestyle off campus and time for families to be together. We identified the issues of safety, communication, enjoyment, accountability and acknowledgement.
We live in a community that does not have sidewalks, so a plan was developed to have three convenient meeting locations in areas that would allow safe travel on the roads to school. It was announced on campus through flyers, posters, emails, and at our flag ceremony. The local associations, Fire Department, California Highway Patrol and county Sheriff’s Department were notified and participated. Each meeting location had a pre-determined start time that was lead by one of our fabulous administrators. Then, upon arrival at school, the students would check-in at a table divided by grade level. They were given a sticker, granola bar and raffle ticket.
Prizes were awarded to individuals, classrooms and grade level by highest percentage participation.
Our Walk and Roll event was a huge success. One hundred and eighty-three of the 440 students walked, biked, car-pooled or bussed to school that day. Families were required to escort their children to school giving us a cumulative estimate of over three hundred fifty individuals choosing a healthier lifestyle for families and the environment. We are planning several Walk and Roll days for next year.
