Earth Friendly Announcements 2011

By:

At Golbow Elementary we are fortunate to have a great little technology room. Upper elementary students are given oppurtunities to run the video camera, the tele-promptor and also be a part of the action by announcing the lunch for the day or to be the Metereologist for that day.

During Earth Week, Golbow's Environmental Chair, Wendy Stares, was on announcements every morning with educational information and a "How can you help?" segment concerning the environment.

Monday was "Reduce Awareness Day". Mrs. Stares spoke about reducing energy, water & trash. Tips were also given on how to do this such as:  Don’t leave the fridge door open too long! Whenever possible, walk, bike or car ride with friends, pour old water (such as from your night table) on plants instead of down the drain, buy in bulk and divide into re-usable containers.

Tuesday was "Re-use Awareness Day". The definition of re-use was given by Mrs. Stares along with examples like re-chargable batteries or making egg cartons into seedling planters, jam jars to hold collections and old art re-used and made into special cards for loved ones.

Wednesday was "Recycle Awareness Day". Examples of recycled items were given and how 1 aluminum can is capable of producing enough energy to run a TV for 3 hours.

Thursday was "Plastic Bags Awareness Day". Here data was given on plastic bags and the effect on marine animals. Then information on where to recycle the bags was given and the pros of using tote bags for all our shopping needs.
