Cleaning up the Beach!

By:

On beach clean-up day students were driven to the coast by volunteer drivers and members of the Rotary Club. Gloves, buckets, and clipboards to collect data were handed out. Students were surprised to find such a variety of trash and objects on the beach including pet gravestones, beer boxes, and small plastic objecs. The students reported that they really understood how throwing trash on the ground can end up in the ocean and in the gyres that they learned about in the classroom before clean-up day. They sorted the trash by recyclables and nonrecyclables, and they recorded all trash on their data sheets. Students reported that they really understand now where the gyres start and understand the importance of reusing and recycling and limiting consumption.
