Seed to Soup Garden Program

By:

Our Seed to Soup Program illustrates the cycle from seed, to plant, to vegetable fruition, and using the waste for composting to nourish future seedlings. Each student is an active participant in the Seed to Soup Program. For example, every class in each grade level tends a 5x10' raised garden bed and plants seeds into this raised bed. They care for the bed while the seeds are maturing making sure to weed, water, and enrich the soil. When the fruits/vegetables are ripe, students harvest them. Students are also included in the process of collecting the yield within the garden to be donated to our local homeless shelter. Our program engages the students within their own lunch experience as well. When lunch is completed, students are then responsible for collecting leftover compostable materials and recycling it in the compost bins throughout the school and in the garden. After breaking down, this organic material is used to nourish the seeds that will begin the next cycle of the Seed to Soup Program. Through this program, students become active participants in inquiry based learning about health and well being. In the Seed to Soup Program, all grade levels participate in a spiraling curriculum that integrates all subject areas using a hands-on approach while teaching the importance or giving back to our community.
