The Great Walk

By:

The problem we identified was the students who attend Skyline High School have the habit of getting to school in non-ecofriendly ways. The goal we developed after realizing this problem was to encourage students to live a healthier life and reduce pollution by walking or carpooling to school. Once we were done, approximately sixty people showed up to our event but many others supported us by wearing green and carpooling to school. Though there is no recorded financial gain for the school, there was a financial gain for people who participated

The Solution that we proposed to help the education of the students was to promote a Walk to School during our Earth Week. We decided in order to encourage people to join us by rewarding them with wrist bands. The time it took to encourage the people who came to do this was two days of previous informing of the event via posters, announcements, and emails.

The timeline for the event was Thursday we made posters that informed that Wednesday was the walk to school and to wear green. Friday at 11:00AM we posted flyers on the school walls, emails were sent out to teachers. Monday, announcements were made to the school saying to walk Wednesday, wear green, and meet in the front of the football field. Tuesday the announcements were made again. Announcements were also made during lunch to meet the next morning at 8AM at the football field to get yellow “on the road to excellence” wrist bands. Wednesday we met at the football field at 8AM and thanked everyone for coming, got names and counted the amount of people. We later rewarded them by handing out wrist bands.  We talked to the people who attended to continue to promote walking and carpooling to school.

The Walk to School on Wednesday, April 18 was set up to raise awareness of the benefits of carpooling and walking to school. The benefits exposed were the reduction of pollution and the cost that people can save from not using as much gas to fuel their cars. The event was encouraged by the reward of one of our schools “On the Road to Excellence” wristbands, giving them the ability to go to lunch five minutes early as well as other privileges.

The result of and objective of the Green Ribbon badge was to raise awareness for what carpooling and walking does for people and the environment for which they live in.
